The Best Rugged Android Smartphones, Tips for the Shopper

By Nick Sachs

Very important tools in our lives today are the Smartphones, which have become even more important than we need PC's or notebooks. They are the reasons why we are connected with the people around the globe. We can take them anywhere we go. Since we use them always, there is a good tendency that we can accidentally drop them or we spill the cup of coffee all over them, or we drop them in sand at the beach, and other clumsiness which we might have with our phones. Our phones can become damaged beyond repair just from one little random accident like that. All the data inside the phone, including our contacts, messages, and media can be loss in an instant. Thus, to avoid this from happening, it is best to have these phones built like tanks so that it will be protected against the environment and small accidents.

The Android Smartphone was released last year and was built in this way wherein the Motorola DEFY had a tough construction with a price which was around $300. The features were also great including a 2 GB internal storage, 3.7? display with an 854480 resolution, 800 MHz OMAP 3610 chip (Cortex A8) with PowerVR SGX530 GPU, and 512 MB RAM.

This year was different with the creation of the 3 contenders in the rugged Smartphone space, which includes the sequel to DEFY, the Motorola DEFY+, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Active, and the Samsung Galaxy Xcover. Let us discuss in details each of the features of these phones.

You cannot really point out a big difference with Motorola DEFY+ from the original DEFY. The only difference would be its additional features which includes a 25% faster CPU, clocked at 1 GHz, and it comes with Android 2.3. Samsung, even though has been making rugged phones for a while, they haven't made a rugged Android Smartphone, and so this one is their first. Sony Ericsson is seeing the potential of these rugged Smartphones, too, and they want to enter this market.

Among the three contenders, I can say that Motorola DEFY+ is the best, regardless of the price. This is my most love rugged android. Personally speaking, its best feature is its good Cortex A8 CPU, with a large enough resolution (854480) that allows you to play most 3D games out there, and for its 3.7?, it's very compact. It is smaller in size as compared to those 3.2? phones out there. Motorola already has some of the best talk-time in phones thus if you care a lot about battery life in phones, this one is for you. It can have a huge battery at 1700 mAh.
