As a truck driver you are out on the roads for up to 12 hours at a time, so you will see many weird and wacky things on Britain's roads. Unfortunately they also see a LOT of traffic jams, which can be caused by a variety of reasons from accidents to road works to speed check areas. These jams can last for several hours, causing inconvenience, frustration and anger for those involved.
This is especially true for truck drivers as you have to make your delivery and get back home in time to see your family so could do without sitting in traffic for hours on end! But however bad a traffic jam you come across, take comfort from the fact that the following traffic jams were probably much worse for the truck drivers involved!
The worst, which happened in China in August 2010, was actually blamed on truck drivers! The jam went on for more than 9 days on the National Expressway 110 which links Beijing and Zhangjiakou and was so bad that drivers were photographed playing cards at the side of the road. On top of construction work being carried out, an increased number of lorries on the road were given as the reason for the delays. It was not the first time such a long traffic jam had happened either!
You may think that cities you have driven through have "bad traffic", such as London maybe. Well spare a thought for the people on the roads in Sao Paolo. In 2009 they set a record for having over 35% of the roads blocked throughout the city!
In a completely different climate, Moscow is another city that has traffic problems - every time it snows which as you can imagine is quite often!
The length of the typical traffic jam you will see is probably only a few miles and still feels like it takes an age to get through. Imagine what the worlds' longest traffic jam would be like...110 miles long! This was near Paris in 1980.
